What began in 2020 as a small initiative during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic has since grown into one of the UK’s most impactful medical non-profits. In just five years, the British Indian Medical Organisation (BIMO) has transformed into a thriving community rooted in equity, inclusion, and opportunity—supporting thousands of students, doctors, and international graduates across the UK and beyond.
Impact in Numbers
Our journey is best told through impact:
300+ national events delivered, reaching 9,000+ people across the UK and globally.
220 academic webinars with over 6,000 attendees.
50+ career development workshops and 4 CPD-accredited conferences
These initiatives have created accessible, high-quality opportunities for those pursuing careers in medicine—breaking down barriers to entry and progression in one of the most competitive professions.
Mentorship at the Core
Mentorship has been central to our mission. Through five structured national programmes, BIMO has:
Supported 250 medical students.
Guided 30 junior doctors.
Helped more than 600 international medical graduates (IMGs)Â successfully transition into UK medical careers.
Collaborated with the General Medical Council and Wesleyan
These mentorship programmes have not only provided knowledge and skills but also instilled confidence, helping participants navigate career pathways that might otherwise have felt unattainable.
Driving Change in Surgical Education
BIMO has also made significant contributions to surgical training. We have delivered three national surgical skills programmes, including one of the UK’s first free Royal College-endorsed courses. These initiatives have trained 54 aspiring surgeons, equipping them with technical skills and access to resources that are often financially or geographically out of reach.
A Growing Global Community
What began as a UK-based initiative has grown into a global platform. Today, BIMO’s community spans 80 countries and includes more than 3,000 members worldwide. Beyond numbers, BIMO has established itself as a framework for widening participation, inspiring curriculum change, and shaping national conversations on inclusion, policy, and healthcare leadership. We have actively raised awareness and led conversations on improving cardiovascular health within the South Asian Community, through our work with Asian Voice.
Recognition and Awards
Along this journey, BIMO has been honoured with some of the most prestigious awards in recognition of its impact:
The Diana Award (2024)Â for social action and leadership.
Imperial College Union Outstanding Achievement Award (2025) for outreach and community engagement.
National commendations for leadership and contributions to diversity in medicine.

These accolades are not just milestones, but affirmations of the importance of creating equitable opportunities within healthcare.
Looking Ahead
As BIMO celebrates its fifth anniversary, our vision remains steadfast: to empower, inspire, and build a more equitable healthcare system for the future.
We extend a heartfelt thank you to our growing team, alumni, and patrons whose support has made this journey possible. Your belief in BIMO continues to fuel our mission and shape the lives of future generations of doctors.
